Cancer support group in jeopardy

THE future of a vital service, which has supported thousands of people affected by cancer throughout Northumberland, has been put in doubt after crucial funding has been discontinued.

The Northumberland Macmillan Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) Welfare Benefits service, which started in 2007, looks set to close county-wide at the end of March, unless major help is found. A slimmed-down version may still be offered in parts of the region, with one CAB representative saying he is ‘absolutely certain’ that attempts will be made to keep it going somehow.

The Macmillan Cancer Support Mobile Information Service will travel across the county to give people information about tackling the disease.

On Monday, it will be outside the City Museum in Lancaster city centre from 10am until 4pm, before moving elsewhere in the county.

Helen Tuvey, Macmillan lead information support specialist, said: “Our Macmillan information team can answer any concern about cancer, including information about treatments, side effects, benefits advice and what support is available locally. “We’re here for anyone affected by cancer, those with a cancer diagnosis, friends, relatives and carers.” Last year, more than 26,000 people visited the team’s two buses which cover the north of England and the East Midlands.

Dartmoor walks allow carers to be with nature

FREE Dartmoor walks are being organised for people who care for a loved one affected by cancer so they can take some time off and re-energise themselves.

The monthly walks are designed to give cancer carers a chance to be with nature, step away from the trauma they are going through and find time and space form themselves.

Verran Townsend, a qualified mountain leader and founder of OutsideInsights company, which organises similar walks for business people to help them think outside the box, started organising the Dartmoor walks after his partner was diagnosed with cancer.
