A hotel manager has dedicated a year of fund raisers to a charity in memory of her uncle.

Katie Savage, 32, was appointed manager of Langshott Manor, in Ladbroke Road, Horley, last September and has taken the new year as an opportunity to make the MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Society the hotel’s ‘charity of the year’.

This means every fund raising event that takes place at the hotel in 2013 will raise money for that charity.

Katie said the cause was very close to her heart. “My uncle suffered from the disease from the age of 28 and sadly passed away at the age of 44 leaving behind two young sons.”

She added: “I watched my uncle deteriorate from a fun loving, energetic, strong man to a shell of his former self that could do nothing for himself.

“I’m passionate about the charity. It helped my family by arranging grants and funding so he could get carers and as he got worse they put him in contact with people who could give him help.

“I’m now in a position where I can help to make a difference and give back to that charity.”

The first event on the fund raising calendar is a vintage tea afternoon on February 9.

Anyone is welcome to join the event between 2.30pm and 5pm and enjoy a truly English afternoon tea with mini scotch eggs, smoked salmon and watercress tarts, cakes and more for £21 a head.

There will also be vintage stalls and a valuation area where people can bring their old items to be valued.

Katie will continue raising money with events throughout the year, including a half marathon which she plans to run this summer with three other managers at the hotel.

She said: “It’s a fantastic charity and not well known about unless you have had a personal experience with the illness.

“I could have chosen any charity but we wanted something we would feel passionate about and it’s been nice to be able to say ‘let’s get together and work as hard as we can for this charity’.”
