Marlon Fulcher, who was among four Break children’s home workers from Mundesley who were foiled by the weather as they attempted a four-peaks challenge.

They were ready for the soaring peaks, but four courageous care workers were foiled by the pouring rain as they attempted a fearsome challenge on Saturday.

The foursome, who work at Break’s children’s home at Mundesley, hoped to scale the four tallest peaks in England in 24 hours to pay towards a dream holiday for their charges.

But, after being beaten by torrential rain that soaked the Lake District from dawn until dusk, they are now looking to have another tilt at the challenge next year.

Marlon Fulcher, 36, from Cromer, Scott Olivey, 40, from Northrepps, 24-year-old Rob Kavanagh from Cromer and Tom Brown, 28, from Aldborough, set off early on Saturday.

But, as Mr Fulcher explained, the torrential rain soon took its toll.

He said: “Rob and Tom’s waterproofs didn’t hold up and they had to dip out after the first peak. And Scott’s waterproofs gave out after the second peak.

“I went up the last ones on my own. But I got halfway up one and there was a river crossing. It wasn’t possible to cross it because the river was so swollen.

“A guy from the Army was there, turning people back because it was dangerous. It was too deep and it was getting deeper.”

He said: “The rain wasn’t relenting, and there was no other way up. Mother Nature had pulled out a card that said ‘go no further’.

“I was absolutely gutted when I got turned back.”

He said it would not be possible to do the challenge again for a while because of the darkening nights, but added that the four wanted to have another go next year.

The attempted climb would have totalled more than 10,000 feet. It was part of a 100-day challenge staff at the home are taking part in to send the children on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday.
