Event aims to provide support to carers

Spreading awareness for carers in South Norfolk

Norfolk’s carers are being targeted at an event taking place later this month as part of a campaign to spread awareness of the services available.

It will have more than 20 carers groups and organisations, with a range of information, advice and expertise available.

There are an estimated 94,691 unpaid carers in Norfolk, many who are caring for loved ones, but campaigners say the rights they are entitled to and the services that they can access are not always known by an individual taking on the respon-sibility of becoming a carer.

Les Eve, 79, is Carers UK’s Norfolk ambassador for carers. He looked

after his wife, Shirley, for half of their 58-year marriage and is now adjusting to life after caring.

He said: “There is so much infor-mation and support available to carers in Norfolk – not just from the hard-working organisations and agencies operating locally, but from other carers who have the experi-ence and understanding of caring for someone.

“I know how difficult it can be to take on the new responsibilities that come with becoming a carer, but there are lots of people locally who can listen, advise and help with anything that you might need.

Sharon Brooks, chair of the Carers Council for Norfolk, added:

“This event is a great opportunity to raise awareness of the support avail-able for carers living in South Norfolk.

“The Carers Council aims to give carers a voice in Norfolk, as outlined in The Norfolk’s Carers Strategy. I hope that the event in April provides the opportunity for carers to take the first step in getting the support that they need.”

The event is being supported by the NHS’s South Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group.

The Carers information Day takes place on April 17th from 10am to 1pm in Connought Hall, Station Road, Attleborough NR17 2AS
