Elderly cancer patients denied financial advice because nurses assume they are well-off
Elderly cancer patients are routinely denied information about the financial help they could receive because hospital staff believe pensioners do not need the support, a government report finds today.

The over-75s are among the least satisfied groups of cancer patients with the standards of care and support from doctors and nurses, according to the Department of Health study.
Fewer than half of the age group reported being given information on their eligibility to benefits for the disabled and other types of financial assistance.

The project is the brainchild of Sara Westwood, Sara’s sister Trudie Bradley, Helen Colebrooke and Sue Cubitt, who were inspired by the story of the Calendar Girls – the members of a Yorkshire Women’s Institute who famously stripped off in a calendar for charity.
The friends were further spurred on by Helen’s daughter Leah, 12, who suffers from type 1 diabetes and Trudie, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in August.
Sara said: “It is an idea I have had for a while but it never really got off the ground. We went to see the Calendar Girls at the Theatre Royal in Norwich and talked about it afterwards and said right lets do it. It made a big difference this time because of Trudie’s diagnosis and wanting to give something back. Breast Cancer Care is a charity that she made really good use of and was a really good support to her. Especially the forums on their website where she was able to women who were going through exactly the same thing at the same time.”
War veteran’s plea for help to stay at home
A TERMINALLY-ill war veteran is pleading for more help at home so that he and his wife can stay together.

Until recently, cancer sufferer Bernard Read, 87, of Poole, has looked after his 86-year-old wife Vera, who has dementia – including cooking for her and giving her insulin injections.
But after a recent spell in hospital he is unable to continue giving her the same care.
His prostate cancer has spread to his bones and he has congestive heart failure. He is visited by carers three times a day.
Mr Read said: “My wife doesn’t get any care at all. The main time it is necessary is at night. I can’t get out of bed and my wife is diabetic.
“If she had a hypo I couldn’t do anything about it. She could be downstairs on her own and she’s bad with electrics.
