THE future of a unique support group which provides a vital lifeline for carers has been saved thanks to a generous donation.

The Family History Group, based at the Brigg Carers Support Centre, has been providing ideal relaxation and respite for dedicated carers for more than three years.

The group, which was due to close later this year due to a lack of funding, has now received a donation of £800 from the Santander Foundation to secure its future.

Group facilitator and historian John Dawson said the group makes such a difference to its members.

“The group has many purposes for our members who tirelessly and selflessly care for their family or close friends 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Mr Dawson.

“Members thoroughly enjoy researching their family history and looking at various archives.

“Our monthly meetings give carers some valuable ‘me time’ and the centre provides trained sitters who can take over for two hours so the carers don’t have to constantly worry about their loved ones.

“The new funding will ensure we can go on further research trips, access more archives and records.”

Les Barrett, 86, of Broughton, cares for his wife.

“I only joined this group a few months ago but already I have traced my wife’s family tree to 1779 – which is incredible,” he said.

“It has been really interesting looking at old records and press cuttings – it really helps you take your mind off things at home for a couple of hours.

“I always find myself looking forward to the monthly meetings because everyone at the group is very friendly and being fellow carers they know exactly how you are feeling and share your worries.”

The Family History Group’s next meeting will take place on May 17 at Scunthorpe Central Library.

Sessions take place from 10am to noon on the third Tuesday of every month, usually at the Carers Support Centre in Redcombe Lane, Brigg.

Sue White, carers support worker, said: “It is great news for the group that the bid from the Santander Foundation was successful.

“The future of the group was, up until now, very uncertain.

“In many cases the monthly meetings are the only opportunity for carers to access a much-needed break and enjoy an interest of their own.

“The funding will ensure the family history group will continue to flourish and support carers in the local community.”
