Carer mum forced to bath disabled son at Premier Inn

A MUM told last night how she is forced to wash her disabled teenage son in an £80-a-night HOTEL because housing bosses refuse to install a bath in her home.

Loving … June cares full-time for wheelchair- bound son Jonjo

Fed-up June Monaghan, 49, claims her desperate pleas to have a tub fitted for wheelchair-bound Jonjo Murphy have been snubbed.

And for the past SEVEN MONTHS she taken celebral palsy sufferer Jonjo, 17, to a Premier Inn four miles away from her home to give him a proper wash.

Last night 5ft 2in June, of Robroyston, Glasgow, said: “Washing him was a nightmare in the shower so I started using the bath at a hotel because it’s bigger and easier.

“It’s the only way to make sure he has a proper wash.

“Jonjo is too heavy to manoeuvre in the shower. Lifting Jonjo has taken its toll on me.”

Frustrated June, who wants a hoist and bath installed in her two-bedroom bungalow, believes she’s being “ignored” by housing chiefs — forcing her to use the budget chain hotel in Tollcross once a month.

In the last five years June had a special ‘wet room’ fitted but she said the chair provided is too large.

June said: “I have asked to be moved to new flats around the corner but I was told I’m not eligible.

“The council fitted a special chair in the bathroom to help but it’s for an adult. Because of Jonjo’s condition he’s small and just slides out.

“Because I can’t clean him properly he gets really sore. No one is listening — I feel powerless.

“The hotel staff are great but I can’t afford to keep going.”

Jonjo has needed 24-hour care since being born 14 weeks early. June quit her job running a pub to care for him with the help of her husband Robert, 51. But nine years ago welder Robert was hit by a car and left permanently brain damaged.

She now cares for BOTH with the help of staff from Arcadia nursing agency, contracted by Glasgow City Council. Last night authority bosses admitted they’re “concerned” about June washing Jonjo in a hotel.

A spokesman said: “Occupational therapists say Jonjo’s bathing needs are most appropriately met by using a wet room, shower chair and mobile hoist. Two carers visit twice a day to ensure he is properly washed. We would be concerned for Jonjo’s well-being if his mother is washing him in a hotel bathroom without assistance. We have already agreed to look again at Jonjo’s care plan.”

Bungalow owners Homes Scotland said they’ve spent £9,500 on adaptations in the past five years.

Director Nicki Donaldson added: “Mrs Monaghan needs to ask for an assessment from the council’s occupational therapist for further work.”
