Residents of a Lowestoft care home were moved out yesterday evening because of the state of the cleanliness of residents’s rooms.

The 15 residents of Orme House Residential Care Home have been relocated to other homes in the area by Suffolk County Council.

The move came after an inspection by environmental health officers by Waveney District Council.

The officers had visited the building after someone contacted the district council over concerns over health and safety issues linked to wiring and electrical equipment.

Phil Harris, district council spokesman said; “However on entering environmental health officers realised there were far greater concerns environmental health concerns.

“We are talking about general cleanliness of residents’s rooms.”

After the inspection the district council contacted Suffolk County Council, which over sees care homes.

A Suffolk County Council spokesman said: “As soon as we were alerted to the situation we, along with our partners, took immediate action to ensure the wellbeing of all residents at the home – that was our immediate concern.

“These conditions are simply unacceptable and we are carrying out an investigation to identify the full extent of the situation.

“We worked with residents and their families to help them move out of the home yesterday evening and we continue to support them in considering their future options.”

This afternoon environmental health officers were still clearing residents rooms, with mattresses being removed and covered up. Police were also at the scene.

According to an inspection last March by the Quality Care Commission Orme House Residential Care Home on Kirkley Cliff provides personal care for 19 people.

It is a private home.
