NHS staff are to tour rural Northumberland in a VW campervan as part of ongoing efforts to raise awareness of the early symptoms of cancer amongst local residents.

‘Daisy’, as the campervan is affectionately known, will be visiting locations across Tynedale, Berwick and Alnwick during April to spread the word on the importance of being clued up on the early cancer symptoms and why keeping an eye on your body and knowing what’s normal and what’s not, should be routine.

People are encouraged to pop out and say hello to Daisy and the NHS staff and volunteers who’ll be travelling with her. At each stop they will be handing out information about the early signs and symptoms of cancer, talking to people about what to look out for in their bodies and dispelling any myths and taboos that surround the disease.

The Daisy campervan will be visiting some of the more remote parts of the county including Allendale, Haydon Bridge and Bellingham as well as market days in Berwick, Alnwick and Hexham town centres.

The cancer awareness tour has been organised by the North of Tyne Healthy Communities Collaborative (HCC), an NHS led project tasked with raising awareness of early cancer symptoms and impacting on how quickly people go and see their GP with symptoms – a major cause in the region’s above average mortality rates from cancer.

Lesley Davie, project manager for the HCC said: “Research has shown that whilst the majority of people have been touched by cancer through family and friends, worryingly many are unaware of the symptoms of the disease and may be too embarrassed or frightened to make an appointment with their GP if something appears to be wrong.

“We’ve organised the Daisy cancer campervan as part of our ongoing work to raise awareness of the early symptoms and the importance of going to see your GP if you spot something unusual in your body.

“As a team we’re really looking forward to chatting with local people, dispelling any of the myths that might exist around cancer and trying to get across the message that the earlier a cancer is caught, the greater the likelihood that it can be treated successfully.

“We want to meet as many people as possible on the tour so we hope people come out and say hello.”
